Christian Siriano FW 2012

Christian Siriano’ Fall 2012 collection had an unlikely muse, bats. Christian stated his inspiration came after viewing the 1930’s film “The Vampire Bat”. I would not have connected the correlation of the winged creature and the Siriano collection, but after hearing the direction the connection seemed to make perfect sense. His use of ebony leathers topping off flowing layered gowns seemed to take flight against the runway. The cascading fabrics seemed to elevate the wings of the bats flying in the elusive night sky.

The color palette of noir, wine, platinum and stone flowed effortlessly with each design that hit the runway. Each dress was a showpiece thoughtfully designed to intrigue the night. The silhouettes included mermaid fishtail hemlines with sensational splits offering just enough peek of the leg. The fitted pencil skirts and dresses were vampy in piped leather in geometric patterns. The gothic esthetic was felt in the bourdeux colored lips and slicked hair were paired perfectly to tell The Vampire Bat story. Siriano clearly had the imagination to turn out yet another crowd pleasing collection complete with a standing ovation for the designer.

Custo Barcelona Fall 2012 Collection

The Fall 2012 Custo Barcelona collection was entitled “Raw Vision.” The color palette used in the line were signifying elements of nature and life, the black was unity, brown was earth, green was nature, red was love, and white stood for purity. The difference in this Custo Barcelona collection was definitely the defining use of color. Wool looped knitted sweaters dominated the runway in dresses, tops and shawls. Metallic finished fabrics were also heavily used in all elements of the design.

One consistent aspect of the collection was patchwork in blazers and slacks in the menswear line. The entire homme line incorporated fascinating graphic prints, two tone details, and unconventional silhouettes making the men’s suit thoughtful again. The women’s collection seemed reminiscent of the South American Andes, the lush knitwear and knee high open toe fringe boots made me think of snow capped mountains. One stunning ebony metallic finished jacket with an ivory fur collar and cuffs was designed to perfection offering a new approach to chic outerwear. Custo Barcelona offers a distinct perspective on 2012 fall fashion making its mark upon us.

Daphne Guinness FIT Exhibition

This has been my first post in a while since I moved to New York, several months ago but none the less it should be shared. In my quest to soak up all things fashionable in the city, I visited the Daphne Guinness fashion exhibition, at my school The Fashion Institute of Technologly. Thanks to my best friend for bringing it to my attention, all the wonderment that was on display.

The exhibition featured the personal collection of designer clothes and shoes by socialite, Daphne Guiness. Who is Daphne Guiness?  Daphne Suzanne Diana Joan Guinness was born in 1967, the daughter of brewery heir, Jonathan Guinness,  yes of Gusiness beer-Lord Moyne, and French beauty, Suzanne Lisney. Her paternal grandmother was Diana Mitford, one of the legendary Mitford sisters. In 1987, at the age of nineteen, Daphne married Spyros Niarchos. After her divorce and over the past decade has emerged as a fashion icon. Daphne's persona and collection of impressive wears had caught the attention magazine editors, designers and fashionistas alike. The Collection of couture was breathtaking. The exhibit feature stunning shoes by Alexander McQueen and Nina Ricci., eloborate couture creations from Chanel, Gareth Pug, and Givenchy. As you walk through the dimly lit halls a mystical film tribute to Alexander McQueen, plays overhead starring Daphne Gusiness directed by Indrani. The entire experience will perhaps bring you closer to understanding Daphne's journey through her love of the art of fashion.

The Daphne Guiness Exhibition runs through January 7, 2012 at the Museum at FIT. Admission is gratis.

"We need better things, not more. We should not pollute the world with meaningless, unused things when we can make and support things of rare and precious beauty.” -Daphne Guiness
